               <p>La compagnie s'était retirée ; la famille venait de s’asseoir autour du poêle ;
                     <persName type="fictif" key="suzette">Suzette</persName> achevait de ranger la
                  vaisselle. Avec le soir qui tombait, le vent glacial s'était levé ; il hurlait à
                  réjouir les gens bien à l'abri, au coin d'un bon feu.</p>
               <p>Tout à coup on frappa à la porte :</p>
               <p>— Eh bien ! qui vient là, à cette heure ? car, à <placeName type="fictif">Fragicourt</placeName>, riche ou pauvre, on ne frappe jamais aux portes ; on
                  entre comme au moulin. On frappa encore.</p>
               <p>— Entrez !</p>
               <p>Deux garçons parurent sur le seuil, et l'un des deux, qui semblait pourtant le
                  plus jeune, prit la parole pour demander la permission de se reposer un moment
                  avec son compagnon ; car ils venaient de loin et ils allaient <note>(1) La saumure
                     est composée avec de l'eau où l'on a fait dissoudre du sel par petites
                     quantités, après y avoir mis d'avance un œuf. On la verse dans le saloir quand
                     elle est froide.</note>

                  village et d'air très avenant, ils avaient pensé qu'elle ne refuserait pas
                  d'accueillir des marcheurs fatigués.</p>
               <p>Cela fut dit avec une politesse assurée*<note type="annotation">Politesse assurée.
                     Qui indique une certaine confiance en soi.</note>, un accent qui ne sentaient
                  pas du tout le village. L'orateur ajouta même avec grâce :</p>

               <p>Il paraissait a voir quatorze ou quinze ans. Il était bien vêtu, presque
                  élégamment.</p>

                  Il était un peu plus grand que son compagnon, avec des vêtements râpés, des
                  souliers endommagés sous la poussière qui les couvrait. Mais il avait de beaux

                     <p>C'est en ces termes que le poète allemand <persName type="historique" ref="https://www.wikidata.org/wiki/Q61058">Uhland</persName> rappelle et décrit le devoir d'hospitalité en faveur
                        des gens honorables qu'a frappés le malheur. Mais, en général, accordons à
                        l'infortune les secours que notre position nous permet de lui offrir ;
                        accueillons les pauvres avec bienveillance toutes les fois qu'ils paraissent
                        mériter notre pitié et nos sympathies.</p>
                     <p>Procédons néanmoins avec discernement et que nos aumônes ne soient jamais un
                        encouragement à la paresse et aux mauvais instincts de ces dangereux
                        vagabonds qui promènent par vaux et par chemins leur incurable fainéantise.
                        Si l'un de ces individus frappe à notre porte, demandons-lui à quel travail
                        il est propre ; offrons-lui nos bons offices pour lui en procurer et
                        adressons-le à l'autorité municipale pour qu'il soit pourvu à ses besoins
                        les plus urgents.</p>
                     <p>On ne saurait trop flétrir la dureté de cœur, l'égoïsme et l'avarice de ceux
                        qui refusent de secourir les véritables pauvres, notamment les veuves, les
                        orphelins et les vieillards sans famille.</p>
